another winner, another contest

And the winner of June's contest is: tinylittlelibrarian! Congratulations! (I'll be contacting you shortly to get your address.)

And for July's contest. Another category question. Animals, this time. What is you all-time favorite animal character? It can be real, fictional, talking, believable, whatever.

Can I say that they (yes, there's more than one) are something I made up? The ilbek are winged otters who live in our jacuzzi. If you need to picture them, think of the classic photo of meerkats standing upright in the desert. Add wings, and you have the ilbek. They like water but are also quite content on land. There are seven of them, in the colors of the spectrum. All have very different personalities. Contrary to what one might expect, the red one is very tranquil, almost domestic. It's the violet one that's almost evil, a wicked practical joker. And so on. At one point I had fantasies of actually writing a children's story about them, but if I tried to now, I'm afraid their personalities would be much too grown-up for kids.

My all time fictional favorite is the cat Joe Grey from the Joe Grey mystery series by Shirley Rousseau Murphy. I also enjoy the little animals in the Mossflower series by Brian Jacques.

For non fiction I liked reading about the elephants in When Elephants Weep by Jeffery Moussaieff Masson.

My favorite has got to be Wilbur from Charlotte's Web, but I also really like all of Kevin Henkes' mouse characters (Chester, Lily, Wendell, Chrysanthemum, Owen).

I always liked Martin the Warrior from the Redwall books by Brian Jacques. He was a warrior mouse who protected Redwall Abbey. Very cool. There are so many great animal characters in books though it is a difficult decision to pick a favourite...

I don't know about favorite all-time, but recently I liked the armoured bear in The Golden Compass series, and Rosie the elephant in Water for Elephants.

I love Bugs bunny. He's clever, smart and has a great sense of humor.

Reepicheep the mouse from The Chronicles of Narnia. He would defend his honour or the honour of his kings or queens, or Aslan to the death! You've got to love such chivalry in such an animal as a mouse.

My favorite real animal has always been the otter. I love watching them frolic and play on those nature shows. Years ago I took one of those personality tests that matched your personality with an animal and I was an otter. I was of course thrilled!

As far as make believe animals, that is kind of hard. Snoopy would be my number one choice as I have been a lover of Peanuts for as long as I can remember. I used to sit around drawing Snoopy when I was a kid.

On the other side of the coin I love the Nazgul, as created by Weta for the LOTR movies. Though they are the 'baddies' they are amazing looking creatures. Them and the Balrog. I cannot wait to see how they render Smaug when The Hobbit is made into a film.

I'm a bit late for this, but I'm going to answer the question anyway because it's such a cool one. My very favourite is probably Pan from His Dark Materials. Well, he's not exactly an animal, just animal-shaped, but I guess he counts.

I also love Greebo the cat, the librarian (an orangutan) and Maurice from Discworld, Mr. Cat from Peter S. Beagle's Tamsin, Fiver from Watership Down, Sirius from Dogsbody, Mogget from the Old Kingdom series and Barnabas the dog from Sandman.
